Obesity crisis in America

If you are struggling to reach your Target Weight, you are not alone.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there has been a dramatic increase in obesity during the past 20 years.  Did you know that over two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese? Of those who lose weight through dieting, approximately 85% gain it back. Additionally, in the United States, approximately 17% of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese.

With doctor visits, high-priced prescriptions, and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer related to obesity, many Americans are on a short path to poor health and disease. Not too long ago, I was on that same path, but I made the decision to change course, get healthy, and reach my target weight.

When working toward your target weight, the ultimate goal is to improve your health by reaching a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index), thus reducing the risk for diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. In 2008, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a weight-loss maintenance study of 1,032 overweight and obese adults. The study found that brief personal counseling and Web-based intervention strategies increase the likelihood of keeping weight off for more than three years.

“The big discovery of this study is that losing weight and keeping it off is possible if you have ongoing, long-term support,” said study second author Victor J. Stevens, Ph.D., a senior researcher at Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research.

“Everyone in this country—men, women, and children of every racial group—is getting heavier because our society promotes eating too much and not getting enough exercise,” Dr. Stevens says. “We all need a personal health coach.
